SPORTS TRAIDER is helping to promote self-financed basketball short Diembe by film-maker Anderson West

Here is his story: by PAUL BROWN @pbsportswriter.

“The film is based on the real life accounts of migrant teenagers who moved to Northern England in the early 2000s from places like Zimbabwe, Malawi, Kenya, Jamaica and the US.

“I myself moved to Stoke on Trent when I was 13 years old back in the early 2000s, so in a way the film is loosely based on events in my life as well.

“Basketball plays an important part of the film, because it’s the thing that helps Diembe develop a true friendship with one of the lads at his school, Tony. So Diembe becomes more than just “that new African kid” to his new friend, which helps him feel welcome.

“We ran a successful Kickstarter campaign for the Diembe film and we were backed by 98 people in total, including Bimbi Philips his team at Bimbi Philips Media, he is the now executive producer for the film.

“We will be working with Bimbi Philips Media to make sure the film gets the right kind of exposure and to get across it’s message of how sport can bring people together as well as the pitfalls of racism and the false stigmas around immigration to this country.

“We just finished filming last week Friday, 17th April, after filming for 6 consecutive days around Stoke on Trent and Manchester.

“We are currently in post production and are looking to finish the film around August. The film will be between 25-30 minutes long and we can’t wait to show it to the world.”
